Maps (-) is pushed to market

There is an application I've been working for some time. Really, I needed such a basic information as maps to be available on my smart-phone at any time. There is a nice AndNav application that does even more that I need in this case but it's a big one and a little slow as for my taste. Plus I wanted an app that does not annoy with GPS messages.
Here we go. Maps (-) is on the Market.

  1. Please check out http://code.google.com/p/osmdroid/, it's basically the core of AndNav.

  2. It is "the core of AndNav" only in terms of functionality. Code is completely different. I needed it to be more responsive than AndNav. That's actually main motivation behind this development.

  3. Hi,
nice application, I have been looking for something like this for a while.
I have no idea how difficult that would be, but it would be great to have the ability to download the maps in a certain region, say 20 km around a
given spot. Any chance for that?
    Cheers

  4. Hi, thank you for the feedback. This "region" caching and "delayed" caching is something I have in plans too. Will gladly implement it after fixed "Cards (-)" app makes it to the next release (this is what makes me busy :))

  6. Hi,
this is Tom again, see post 28.12.09.
I have the upgrade, and I am happy about the caching. However, I may not understand the whole thing. I will be in Greece for a holiday next month, and would like to have them aps of the whole country (I guess 1 Gig will be enough?)
So how do go about it? Just put the region I want on screen and say "Cache"? Then it asks me for level, I would like them all I guess. Can this be automatised?
    Cheers

  7. Hi Tom,
it's true, caching will pop-up dialog with zoom level selection. I guess it's not very intuitive though. Main idea is to give more flexibility with amount of data needed to be loaded to phone. For the whole country I would suggest cache everything to level 14 or 15 for Greece. It doesn't looks like OSM covers this country very well. Streets name are only visible on level 16. So, for the Cities that are potentially would be visited it's a good idea to cache them to 16-17 level individually.

  8. Hi Andry,
thanks for the support, and the nice application. I am never lost in the jungles of Singapore anymore, since I have Maps(-)...
About the caching: Would it be possible to download all the maps (of Greece eg ...) to my
PC and then copy the stuff over to the phone?
So that I know I have them all? Or could you maybe (if you have time etc) put a loat row to the level selection, called ALL?
    Cheers

  9. Nice app, but I found it surprisingly obtuse to understand.
I'd like a mode for 100% offline viewing, where it does not attempt to add tiles to the cache queue and does not attempt to use the radio. I'd use this when roaming or in poor signal areas. Right now I use "airplane mode" for this, which is not quite right.

When zoomed out I'd like to see a different color for tiles that have data at only a more detailed level (so I can zoom way out, but still identify the small section I cached earlier). Same when zoomed in... I'd like a little hint on screen that if I zoom out my display will (or won't) be blank also.

  10. There other additions would be nice: "show cache size" and "clear cache" and "zoom to cached tiles".
